It seems like the right moment to consider reinstating the ‘Skins.
The descendants of the Blackfeet chief who inspired the famous Washington Redskins logo are now advocating for the return of both the name and the imagery, which were dropped in 2020 over concerns that it was a slur.
As many are aware, the team now goes by the name Washington Commanders, and reactions about that name have been less than favorable.
Chief Two Guns White Calf, who was born on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, served as the inspiration for the franchise mascot designed by Walter “Blackie” Wetzel in 1971 as a tribute to the chief.
“He was a great leader and had a significant impact on the National Football League for 50 years,” said estate representative Morningstar Gopher.
While some Native American activist groups campaigned for the name and logo’s removal, the descendants of Chief Two Guns White Calf argue that the old logo instills a sense of pride and they believe it’s important to honor his legacy.
“They tried to erase us, like we didn’t exist anymore,” remarked Kenneth Conway, the estate’s lead.
They’re determined to advocate for a change, even seeking a meeting with President Donald Trump to further their cause.
“We’re hopeful for a meeting with President Trump to help move this forward,” Gopher stated.
Descendants of the chief who inspired the “Washington Redskins” logo accuse the football team of trying to erase them, call for a meeting with President Trump to get the name restored. The family of Chief Two Guns White Calf says they were never asked about the name change. “They tried to erase us, like we didn’t exist anymore,” said estate lead Kenneth Conway. The descendants say the Redskins logo brought their family pride, and they want the chief to be remembered. “They did not even ask our family for approval. They didn’t ask for anything from us. I mean, we literally got erased,” said Brock Conway, as reported by WTVR. “We’re hopeful for a meeting with President Trump in order to help get this pushed forward,” said Morningstar Gopher. “There’s a lot of diehard Redskins fans down in Washington, D.C. This would be a win-win, I think, for everybody. It would be a win-win for the family because it would be so honored and the history of their ancestor.” The name was removed in 2020 because liberals thought it was a slur. The Washington Commanders are building a new stadium, which is set to open in 2030. Bring back the Redskins. It’s time.

When the descendants of Chief Two Guns White Calf—the actual members of the Blackfeet Nation connected to the historic Redskins brand—express their pride in that legacy, it’s worth paying attention.
I’ve been saying this for a while, and I’ll reiterate:
It really is time to bring back the Redskins.
