Detransitioner Claims Corporate Media Overlooking Clear Link Between Mental Health and Violence Against Trans Individuals

Media Criticism on Transgender Violence

Chloe Cole, a transgender woman, voiced her concerns about corporate media during an appearance on “The Adam Carolla Show.” She noted a lack of exploration into the underlying causes of rising violence against transgender individuals.

Though incidents involving violence tied to transgender people and their allies have gained media attention in recent times, the percentage of transgender adults remains quite low, at about 1% of the U.S. population. Cole pointed out that media outlets have often failed to acknowledge connections between these violent incidents and mental health challenges experienced by some transgender individuals.

“Many people seem to see this issue in black and white,” Cole remarked. She expressed frustration over how mainstream media sometimes downplays the relationship between mental health struggles and violent acts. “Some quickly label those involved as simply ‘crazy’ or ‘mentally ill.’”

Continuing, she suggested that the broader problem lies in a failure to understand the real issues at play, with some medical professionals potentially exacerbating the situation. “Mainstream media tends to uphold certain ideologies instead of critically examining their role in these violent occurrences,” she said.

Cole emphasized that fostering dialogue and unity is crucial to addressing transgender-related violence. “To move forward and prevent further violence, we all need to come together. Regardless of our views, open discussions about the real issues driving this violence are essential,” she added.

In a notable case from August 2025, a transgender man named Robin Westman was alleged to have opened fire in a church, resulting in the death of two students. Reports from sources like the Washington Post and NBC News referred to Westman using feminine pronouns in their coverage.

Another incident that gained attention involved a shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in British Columbia, where the suspect identified as a transgender individual named Jesse Van Rootseller. Reports indicated that a biological male was classified as female after the tragic incident, which left nine people dead and many others injured.

In a separate context, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt assured that the Trump administration places significant importance on threats of violence against transgender individuals. “This is a serious matter worth considering; anyone who dismisses it is willfully ignoring the truth,” she stated. “The administration is committed to understanding the numerous factors contributing to violence and hatred.”
