Detroit man sentenced to 80 years for fatal shootings of 2 West Virginia women

A Detroit man was sentenced Monday to 80 years in prison for the murders of two West Virginia women.

Marquis Jermaine Goodman, 24, was arrested in February for the 2021 shooting deaths of Briar Nicole White, 26, and Kitiana Belcher, 22, in Charleston, West Virginia. Pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder.

At sentencing, Goodman’s lawyers argued for a lenient sentence, arguing that his client was not yet old enough to be reformed, the Charleston Gazette-Mail reported. Goodman apologized to his family and said he never intended to hurt the women. The motive for the shooting remains unclear.

The victims’ families called for the maximum sentence.

White’s mother, Letitia Norman, sobbed as she spoke to Goodman, saying the argument with her daughter “didn’t have to go this far.”

“My life is ruined,” Norman said. “When looking at the baby, you have to sit on the ground and stand over the baby.”

Judge Ken Ballard said Goodman had a long criminal record and had opportunities for rehabilitation, which “clearly did not work out”.

He imposed a maximum sentence of 40 years with each consecutive term served for second-degree murder.
