A Detroit police officer who was on his way home from work was killed Sunday in a hit-and-run crash on the city's east side, authorities said.
FOX 2 in Detroit Officer Cameron Richardson had been with the department for just over a year, police reported, and described him as a family man with two daughters and a military veteran.
“Today, the Detroit Police Department lost Officer Cameron Richardson after one year of service. Officer Richardson was killed in a traffic accident while off-duty,” the department said in a post on X.
Interim Chief Todd Bettison told reporters the city has lost “one of Detroit's greatest cities.”

“He was an excellent officer and a distinguished officer with a distinguished service,” Bettison said, adding that Richardson will not be forgotten. “We're going to fully embrace this family.”
Police said Richardson was driving home from work northbound on Hoover Street at Greiner Street.
Witnesses told investigators that a white van turned left onto Hoover Street and directly in front of the Jeep Wrangler that Richardson was driving.

Officers arrived at the scene just after midnight and found Richardson's Jeep overturned in an accident.
However, the other vehicle left the scene.
Bettison thanked Michigan State Police at a news conference and said they were able to find the white van a short distance from the crash scene.
Police said all occupants of the van were taken into custody and a 28-year-old man was identified as a person of interest. However, that person has not yet been found.
Detroit police did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for further information.
“We have been working tirelessly since this incident occurred, including executing search warrants,” Bettison said. “We have identified the person in that white van. We know who the driver is. We are asking the driver to turn himself in.”
