Tariq Skubal’s Potential Trade from the Detroit Tigers
Players of Tariq Skubal’s talent rarely hit the open market. Currently the American League’s Cy Young Award winner, he has established himself as one of MLB’s most reliable pitchers. Skubal possesses a unique combination of skills that allow him to effectively miss bats while also showcasing the command to limit base runners.
Throughout the offseason, the Detroit Tigers held on to Skubal despite significant interest from other teams. The owner and front office opted instead to focus on building for a surprising 2025 season, which almost led them to the ALCS after a loss to the Seattle Mariners. They bolstered their roster by acquiring Framber Valdez, a top free agent starter, and brought back veterans like Gleyber Torres and Justin Verlander, while also adding Kenley Jansen to reinforce the bullpen.
However, amid that effort, the Tigers have struggled, with a record of 34-46 as of Thursday afternoon. They find themselves 7.5 games behind in the AL Central division and 5 games off the pace for the third wild card spot. This situation complicates matters quite a bit.
Despite having five teams ahead of them in the American League standings, Skubal recently returned from surgery and hasn’t fully reestablished himself in the rotation. His velocity is lower this year compared to 2025, yet his past performance still outshines many others. Interestingly, the overall lack of competitiveness in the American League this season means Detroit may still find a way into the playoffs, even with their current record.
Given the complexities surrounding a potential trade, it’s understandable that the Tigers would set high demands for any team interested in Skubal as a playoff asset.
Reports indicate that the Tigers are more inclined to trade Skubal before the deadline, especially as playoff aspirations fade. According to Jon Heyman, the organization is seeking an athletic hitter, someone who has been a strong performer on the mound and is close to making it to the majors. The Tigers are asking for top prospects, including George Lombard and Carlos LaGrange from the New York Yankees. Both are well-regarded, with Lombard considered a potential top-20 talent in baseball, though the Yankees seem hesitant.
This is a significant haul for a player whose contract expires at the season’s end, making extensions unlikely for players represented by Scott Boras. Yet, Skubal’s value allows the Tigers to demand a lot given their current circumstances.
Curiously, at the start of Wednesday’s game, only two American League teams had a positive run differential, compared to eight in the National League. The Chicago White Sox lead, but even they have a slim three-point lead with a record of only 41-38. The Tigers might argue they’re willing to hold onto Skubal, hoping for a winning streak that could push them back into contention.
With the trade deadline still over a month away, the Tigers seemingly have the upper hand. They could ask for high-caliber prospects or major league performers in exchange for Skubal or decide to keep him and see how the season unfolds. Will other teams risk waiting until late July when options may be limited?
This scenario presents one of baseball’s more intriguing dilemmas. It feels almost guaranteed that Detroit is open to moving Skubal, provided the terms are met. Nevertheless, the situation certainly seems complex.
