Devastated mother takes her own life shortly after husband is accused of murdering their baby girl

A devastated mother of three from Alabama reportedly ended her life just hours after her abusive husband allegedly took the life of their 4-month-old daughter, according to family and police reports.

Molly McKelvey, 28, tragically took her own life on the morning of April 23, as stated by her brother. This followed the death of her young daughter, Lotus McKelvey, who succumbed to injuries that her father, Mikel Kaipolai Arney, is accused of inflicting.

On April 22, Huntsville police responded to an emergency call about an infant who wasn’t breathing. First responders attempted resuscitation, and Lotus was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was shortly pronounced dead, as reported by WAFF.

An autopsy revealed that the baby died from complications resulting from severe internal injuries. Details surrounding the incident remain scarce.

Arney, 34, was present with Lotus when she stopped breathing and was arrested on April 23. He faces charges of domestic violence murder and is currently held on a $250,000 bond, according to prison records.

On the same day, Molly, who had two other children, took her own life, leaving her brother, Christian McKelvey, heartbroken.

“It’s hard to find the right words to express how it feels to hear that the baby had died and then learn that the mother took her own life,” he shared with WAFF.

“It’s something you hear about in movies or on the news, but you never think it could happen to you.”

Christian described Molly as “a truly wonderful sister” and expressed disbelief that he would never witness her newborn niece grow up.

“She was the happiest baby I think I’ve ever seen. It breaks my heart that I won’t see her grow older,” he reflected during an emotional interview.

The family has set up a GoFundMe to assist with funeral expenses for both Molly and Lotus.

The devastating loss has left friends and family “grief-stricken and struggling to cope,” as mentioned on the fundraising page.

In addition to her siblings and mother, Molly leaves behind two young sons, Orion and Micah.

The local newspaper has reached out to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office for more details.
