DHS advises Walz and Frey to respect ICE detainers following the release of nearly 470 criminal aliens.

Department of Homeland Security Urges Action on Criminal Illegal Aliens in Minnesota

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is urging Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to comply with federal immigration detainer requests for over 1,300 criminal illegal aliens currently in state custody. This comes after reports that hundreds were allegedly released back onto the streets.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that both Walz and Frey are “refusing” to work with federal immigration officials, claiming they let around 470 criminal illegal aliens go free in Minneapolis. “We need to ask Mr. Walz and Mr. Frey to change this risky approach and honor the request for the 1,360 criminally illegal aliens detained by ICE in Minnesota,” she remarked. “It’s really just common sense to not let dangerous criminals roam freely among the public.”

Ilhan Omar Critiques Federal Enforcement Efforts

Recently, Frey instructed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to “leave his city,” while Walz has echoed those sentiments, telling the Trump administration to “stay away from Minnesota” following a shooting incident involving ICE agents. Additionally, Frey has implemented an executive order barring federal employees from using city resources for enforcement activities, and local officials have also enforced policies to support illegal immigrants.

In a related note, last February, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison provided a legal opinion indicating that state law prevents local law enforcement from detaining individuals solely based on ICE requests.

This issue has gained urgency, highlighted by a tragic incident last year in Virginia where an undocumented immigrant was released from custody and then committed murder the following day.

Walz’s office responded to the accusations, asserting they are “entirely incorrect.” A spokesperson emphasized that the state Department of Corrections respects all detainees, including those detained by ICE. “We always notify ICE of release dates to facilitate their pickups,” the spokesperson noted, further explaining that ICE is responsible for arrangements for detainee transfers.

Currently, there are 207 ICE detainees housed within Minnesota’s correctional facilities. The vice president has mentioned that numerous federal agents are being deployed to the Twin Cities to assist with deportation efforts, with operational expansions expected soon.

On another note, the DHS has begun identifying some of the most serious criminal cases among illegal aliens apprehended in Minnesota, including individuals with charges ranging from child exploitation to murder.

Just last weekend, nearly a dozen illegal aliens with murder convictions were arrested in Minneapolis, many of whom had prior deportation orders yet remained in the country.
