Trump Administration Criticizes New Jersey Governor Over ICE Tracking Portal
The Department of Homeland Security under President Trump has voiced strong disapproval of New Jersey’s Democratic Governor Mikie Sherrill for her recent commitment to launch an online portal allowing residents to report sightings of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Sherrill, a veteran of the U.S. Navy, stated, “We’re going to launch a portal so people can upload all their cell phone videos and warn people,” encouraging citizens to document encounters with ICE agents on the streets.
A spokesperson for DHS reacted strongly, saying this initiative “certainly appears to be obstruction of justice.” They argued that such actions heighten risks for their personnel and disrupt operations, claiming that incidents of violence against their staff have surged by over 1,300%.
The spokesperson further asserted that Sherrill’s policies pose a greater danger to the citizens of New Jersey than to ICE agents themselves. “If local and state officials cooperated with federal law enforcement, there would be no need for ICE to operate in New Jersey,” they argued, highlighting a few recent arrests by ICE in the state, which included individuals with serious criminal backgrounds.
Among those arrested was Jose Ortega Villalba, a Mexican immigrant convicted of sex crimes against a minor. Other suspects highlighted were Rodrigo Roman Basantes, who was convicted of endangering a child, and Felix Quintana Díaz, who had been convicted of murder.
In response to the backlash, a representative for Governor Sherrill emphasized that ensuring the safety of New Jersey residents is her highest priority. They hinted at upcoming measures to shield residents from what they termed “federal overreach.”
Sherrill cited troubling incidents, like the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Preti during an ICE encounter, and criticized ICE for their actions. She also mentioned, “We need documentation, and we’re going to make sure we get it,” regarding the tracking portal.
This situation has prompted a reaction from the White House, which offered support to ICE and criticized the Governor’s stance. White House Press Secretary Abigail Jackson argued that Sherrill should be more focused on tracking illegal immigrants rather than complicating law enforcement efforts.
Jackson also claimed that ICE personnel are facing increased violence due to misleading rhetoric from certain elected officials, describing serious incidents involving assaults against ICE officers.
