DHS criticizes Newsom's sanctuary policies following the death of a San Francisco social worker

The Department of Homeland Security has criticized both the Biden administration and California Governor Gavin Newsom following the arrest of a Venezuelan man charged in the violent murder of a social worker in a San Francisco hospital.

Wilfredo Jose Tortorello-Ariechi allegedly stabbed 51-year-old Alberto Rangel at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital on December 4. Reports indicate that the attack occurred while he was being escorted to Ward 86, where he supposedly grabbed Rangel and stabbed him multiple times in front of hospital staff.

Tragically, Rangel succumbed to his injuries two days later, on December 6.

Just days after the incident, on December 11, ICE requested that local authorities refrain from detaining suspects and instead release them.

DHS stated that Tortorello-Ariechi had first been encountered by Border Patrol in 2023 and subsequently entered the U.S. during the Biden administration.

In the lead-up to the stabbing, Tortorello-Ariechi is said to have made threats against hospital staff and doctors.

According to officials, he is currently residing in the U.S. illegally.

Acting Assistant Secretary of State Lauren Biss released a strong statement condemning federal immigration policy. She claimed that if it weren’t for what she described as the “reckless open border policy,” Alberto Rangel would still be alive.

Biss urged for better collaboration with federal immigration authorities and laid blame on California’s sanctuary laws. She specifically called on Governor Newsom to prevent the release of the accused murderer, stating, “California’s sanctuary policies are putting American lives at risk.”

In her plea, she noted that releasing individuals who have committed crimes back into the community only endangers others and that many of the safest cities in the U.S. work closely with ICE.

In February, ICE Director Todd Lyons had also sent a letter to California Attorney General Rob Bonta, urging compliance regarding federal detainees. He mentioned more than 33,000 criminal immigrants in California custody.

Currently, Tortorello-Ariechi is being held without bail at the San Francisco County Jail, facing charges of murder and weapon use. His court appearance is set for June 16.

Alberto Rangel, the hospital social worker, is being remembered as a compassionate individual who dedicated his life to supporting vulnerable communities.

As of early 2026, the administration has reported no illegal releases into the interior of the U.S. for eleven consecutive months, with daily arrests dropping significantly compared to previous years.

During the Biden administration, border activity reached unprecedented levels, with around 1.37 million apprehended between 2022 and 2024. Following President Trump’s inauguration in January 2025, this number has decreased sharply.
