DHS shares video of Border Patrol using tear gas during raid in Chicago

Footage Released on Chicago Immigration Raid Incident

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has disclosed video evidence confirming that Border Patrol agents had reason to use tear gas during a chaotic scene involving a crowd that hurled rocks and shouted obscenities at officers during a significant immigration operation in Chicago.

This event took place on October 23, when Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino authorized the deployment of tear gas canisters. Following this action, local media and activist groups filed a lawsuit claiming that Bovino violated a temporary restraining order that restricts the use of such chemicals on demonstrators unless there’s an immediate threat or clear warnings are issued beforehand.

Bovino is scheduled to face a federal court hearing on Tuesday to address his actions during the incident as well as previous tear gas deployments in the area.

Focus Shifts to Chicago’s Immigration Policies

In the recently released DHS video, aerial footage captures Border Patrol agents surrounded while attempting to execute the immigration raid in the Little Village neighborhood, known for its sizable Mexican-American community.

DHS highlighted the visual evidence, stating that it authentically demonstrates the context of the operation. The video starts with drone imagery depicting several gang suspects, who fled and attempted to evade capture by switching license plates and, alarmingly, retrieved a high-powered firearm.

As the chaos intensified, onlookers began to verbally assault the officers, and video shows a woman dressed in black suggesting calling for more people to join the fray.

Reports indicate that up to 100 individuals formed a hostile group, with agents repeatedly urging the crowd to move back. DHS alleged that some individuals even fired commercially available fireworks at law enforcement. The situation escalated further with demonstrators confronting officers and shouting provocative remarks.

The conflict reportedly became heated, with stones being thrown towards the officers. In response to this growing aggression, Bovino issued warnings before deploying tear gas to manage the chaotic crowd.

After the tear gas was released, footage indicated that many in the crowd began to flee, demonstrating the immediate impact of the agents’ decision. According to DHS, the use of chemical agents adhered to established CBP policy aimed at safeguarding both law enforcement and public safety.

In addition to the ongoing legal scrutiny, the operations fall under what’s known as Operation Midway Blitz, a joint effort between ICE and Border Patrol focused on apprehending criminal immigrants and those with outstanding deportation orders.

U.S. District Judge Sarah Ellis, who issued the temporary order, has mandated that Bovino adhere to increased monitoring, requiring him to submit daily reports to the court. She also declined his request to modify restrictions on tear gas usage, emphasizing the need for comprehensive warning protocols prior to its deployment.
