DHS Shutdown and Calls for Reform
During an appearance on “CNN News Central” Thursday, Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-RI) expressed that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown is a result of the previous Trump administration’s actions. He highlighted concerns over “masked ICE agents” operating in communities, creating fear among residents by entering homes without warrants and exhibiting violent behavior. He stressed the urgent need for comprehensive reform.
Co-host Erica Hill brought up the issue of DHS funding, noting the apparent difficulty in reaching an agreement. She pointed out the real impact on TSA employees and mentioned that some Democrats are in discussions with Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), with these talks reportedly initiated by U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.).
Magaziner reiterated that the current crisis stems from the Trump administration’s actions, emphasizing the need for changes in how ICE operates. He stated that while the administration is open to dialogue, it hasn’t committed to legislating the necessary changes, which is insufficient. He mentioned his efforts in Congress to secure funding for DHS, TSA, and the Coast Guard, underscoring that these workers are not responsible for the situation. He cautioned against continuing to allocate funds to ICE without accountability, indicating that past funding would lead to a return to the same harsh tactics unless legal protections are put in place.
