Live Reactions to Trump’s State of the Union Address
A diverse group of U.S. voters expressed their thoughts on President Donald Trump’s remarks during his State of the Union address, particularly concerning the partial government shutdown affecting the Department of Homeland Security. This panel, created by Maslansky & Partners, included 29 Democrats, 30 independents, and 40 Republicans.
Their reactions, illustrated as lines on a graph, showed varying levels of approval, with positive reactions in higher ranges and negative ones lower down. The responses were color-coded: blue for Democrats, red for Republicans, and yellow for independents.
When President Trump claimed that Democrats were responsible for defunding the DHS, partisan sentiments surfaced rapidly. Republican approval ratings increased sharply, while Democratic ratings plummeted below 50%. Independents, however, remained mostly neutral throughout.
In a notable segment, Trump stated, “As we speak, Democrats in this chamber have cut off all funding to the Department of Homeland Security. All cut off. All cut off.” He also brought up the previous shutdown, which he claimed resulted in a two-point drop in GDP.
Interestingly, support among independents jumped by over 50% when Trump asserted his intent to demand necessary funding for border and homeland security. He concluded this segment by telling Congress that their primary responsibility is “to protect Americans, not illegal aliens.”
From there, his subsequent remarks about low inflation and reducing crime contributed to a peak in support among both Republicans and independents, while Democrats continued to express the lowest approval levels.
Overall, the Maslansky poll indicated that Trump’s speech appeared to reinforce existing opinions rather than change minds. “There was little evidence of movement. Instead, voters expressed strong approval or strong rejection,” the organization remarked, noting that they struggled to soften opposition or broaden their appeal significantly. In a context where voter turnout is crucial, reinforcing belief might hold the key.
