Diamondbacks owner reflects on ‘horrible’ signing after playoff elimination, rips Mets-Braves doubleheader

The Arizona Diamondbacks learned their postseason fate after the final game of the regular season, but they're not thrilled about what happened.

Monday's doubleheader split between the Mets and Braves eliminated the reigning National League champions from postseason contention.

All three teams finished with 89 wins and 73 losses, but the D-Backs were on the losing side, losing to both teams from the National League East in the season series.

Arizona was in a tough spot. Unable to control its own destiny, the winner of the first game of the doubleheader had nothing to play for after clinching a postseason berth.

As a result, the Mets used several bench players in the lineup, with Joey Lucge making his second start of the season. Unsurprisingly, the Braves won 3-0.

Arizona owner Ken Kendrick called the ordeal “a huge failure.”

“I predicted a week ago, when this fiasco was happening on so many levels, that the season would end with two games still to be played on the Monday before the playoffs started. That was unwise,” Ken said. Doric told Arizona Sports on Monday.

The doubleheader was scheduled when last week's game was postponed due to Hurricane Helen. Both teams were off that Monday before the storm hit.

Pete Rose suspended by MLB for gambling in previous interview: 'Other guys would kill someone and come back to the game'

“It's disappointing that MLB didn't take a more proactive stance and insist on holding these games earlier. … They played one game on Tuesday, but they played two games last Monday, or last week. We could have played two games on Tuesday, but that may not have happened.''We are in the process of rescheduling the postseason games that have been canceled.''

The Diamondbacks can't put all the blame on MLB. On September 22nd, the team took an 8-0 lead. He also admitted that signing left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery to a one-year contract was a mistake.

Montgomery had just come off a great postseason with the Texas Rangers, but he remained unsigned into spring training. Arizona took a gamble and lost. He appeared in 25 games, including 21 starting games, and recorded an ERA of 6.23.

Kendrick said the “terrible” contract was his fault.

“If anyone wants to blame someone for Jordan Montgomery being a Diamondback, they're talking to someone to blame,” Kendrick told Arizona Sports. “Because I brought it. [the front office’s] Note. I pushed it. they agreed to it. That wasn't in our game plan.

“You know, when he was signed — it was right at the end of spring training — and in hindsight, it was a terrible decision to invest that money in a player who performed as poorly as he did. That's our biggest mistake this season.''From a talent standpoint, I'm the culprit. ”

Montgomery is a free agent again, and the Diamondbacks are cleaning out their lockers instead of restocking them for October baseball.
