Concerns Over Caitlin Clark’s Treatment in the WNBA
An Indiana lawmaker is questioning the WNBA’s handling of Caitlin Clark, suggesting there’s a notable difference in the treatment she receives compared to her peers. Despite being a prominent figure in the league, Clark has faced hard fouls and aggressive trash talk during games.
In light of this, several members of Congress have reached out to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, seeking explanations and accountability regarding Clark’s experiences on the court.
The letter expressed concern that the player considered the “face of the league” is subjected to what they called “unnecessary physical hostility and violence.” Senator Marlin Stutzman, who signed the letter, highlighted a specific incident where Alyssa Thomas struck Clark in the throat as a tipping point for their concerns.
Stutzman voiced his frustration with the league, noting how a mere one-game suspension for the incident felt insufficient. He mentioned that it seemed the WNBA might be sidelining a highly talented player out of fear for what could occur in future games, calling it a strategic mistake.
The letter urged Engelbert to address the situation openly, indicating that a response acknowledging the lawmakers’ concerns would be a positive step. The lawmakers also reminded Engelbert of her responsibility to ensure all athletes compete in a “safe and professional environment.” They warned about the repercussions if discrimination or retaliation were present, emphasizing the need for appropriate investigations and protections under federal civil rights laws.
They concluded by appealing for more decisive action from the league. The letter pointed out the WNBA’s potential to inspire young female athletes but warned that this possibility could diminish if the league doesn’t adequately protect its stars. It stressed that fans and the next generation deserve a league where athletes can thrive safely.
Recently, Clark publicly criticized the WNBA for not doing enough to safeguard its players, reinforcing the urgency of this matter.
