Diego Pavia criticizes Heisman voters following his defeat to Fernando Mendoza

Heisman Trophy Reaction from Diego Pavia

Fernando Mendoza is celebrating his Heisman Trophy victory with the Indiana Hoosiers as they head into the College Football Playoff. In contrast, Vanderbilt University quarterback Diego Pavia, who was a Heisman finalist, expressed disappointment over Saturday night’s voting results.

Pavia, an experienced player for the Commodores, opened up about his feelings regarding Mendoza’s win through a post on his Instagram Stories, which included a photo with some of his teammates.

“Huh, voters,” he commented, adding a thumbs down emoji. “But…we’re family for life.”

In the voting, Pavia placed second, receiving 189 first-place votes compared to Mendoza’s 643.

Pavia later issued an apology via social media, acknowledging the honor it was to be a finalist. “As a competitor, I wanted to win just as much as I did in everything I did,” he shared. “It hurt to come so close to my dream and then fall short. I couldn’t express my feelings as I wanted to, and I apologize for that. I respect the Heisman voters and the selection process.” He also praised Mendoza for being a deserving winner, saying, “Fernando Mendoza is an elite competitor and a deserving recipient of this award.”

He reflected on his journey, mentioning the support he’s received from his family, teammates, coaches, and staff. “I’ve had doubts all my life…nothing will be handed to me,” he stated, looking forward to competing again.

Mendoza guided the Hoosiers to a victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship, remaining undefeated and securing the top seed in the College Football Playoff. However, critics noted that Mendoza’s season stats included only 2,980 passing yards and six interceptions across 13 games, despite his impressive 33 touchdowns, leading the Big Ten.

Meanwhile, Pavia—who previously played at New Mexico State and is now in his second season at Vanderbilt—led the SEC with impressive stats, including 27 touchdowns and 3,192 passing yards which he achieved at a completion rate of 71.2%. He also rushed for 826 yards.

His reaction to the voting outcome might not be surprising, though, as he has often expressed confidence in his capabilities, declaring himself worthy of the Heisman. “The Heisman Trophy winner is awarded to the best player in college football,” Pavia commented. “I believe that in order to be myself, I have to check the numbers…I feel like I’m definitely the best player in college football.”

Vanderbilt concluded the season with a 10-2 record and was ranked 14th in the nation.
