Director of National Portrait Gallery steps down after attempted dismissal by Trump

National Portrait Gallery director resigns after Trump tried firing her

Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery Director Resigns

Kim Sadgett, the director of the National Portrait Gallery, has stepped down just two weeks after President Trump attempted to dismiss her. He had described her as “very partisan” and criticized her support of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

In response to her resignation, the Smithsonian expressed gratitude for Sadgett’s 12 years of leadership, highlighting her dedication and innovative approach to portrait storytelling.

Ronnie G. Bunch, the gallery’s first female director and an Australian native, emphasized the gallery’s expansions during her tenure, including significant acquisitions and early daguerreotypes from 1846.

An internal memo featured Sadgett’s statement, where she described leading the gallery as a “once in a lifetime honor.” She reflected on the difficulty of her decision but affirmed it was necessary for the museum’s interests. “The role of a museum director is not about a single individual,” she noted, highlighting the collaborative nature of the mission driven by a talented team.

Her resignation followed Trump’s comments labeling her a partisan and suggesting she was unsuitable for her role. The White House pointed to her past political donations to Democratic figures and organizations. Notably, she contributed to former President Biden’s campaign and to Emily’s List, a PAC that aims to elect women Democrats.

On Monday, the Smithsonian affirmed its autonomy in personnel matters, stating that the governance and oversight rest with the board, which appoints a secretary to manage the institution.

Bunch indicated that Kevin Gober, the museum and culture secretary, would assume the role of acting director moving forward.

In the wake of Sadgett’s resignation, the discussion could also echo President Trump’s earlier statements about removing perceived anti-American ideologies from government entities.

A spokesperson remarked that the Trump administration’s agenda is centered around reviving America’s historical legacy.
