Discarded human ashes discovered in Nevada desert retrieved, raises investigation

Federal authorities are currently investigating after over 300 cremated human remains were discovered in the Nevada desert, not far from Las Vegas.

This unsettling find was initially reported in July when a local individual stumbled upon the remains near Searchlight, just an hour south of the city. By August, officials from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) confirmed that the remains were indeed human.

The remains, essentially crushed bone fragments, were found scattered across an uninhabited area outside of Las Vegas.

On Wednesday, workers from Palm Mortuary and Cemetery removed approximately 315 of these piles of remains from the site. Celena DiLullo, the president of Palm Mortuaries and Cemeteries, spoke to the media about the transfer of the remains to the cemetery’s crypt. She expressed a sentiment that resonates with many: “I think it’s important for us to make sure these people are not forgotten or left behind. It’s important for our community and our profession to show how much we care about these people.”

The BLM and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are continuing their investigation, but so far, they have not determined the origin of the remains. Initial reports suggest they may have been discarded by a commercial funeral home.

Interestingly, while Nevada law permits scattering ashes on public land, BLM regulations specifically prohibit the commercial distribution of cremated remains on federal land.

The location of the discovery falls under BLM-managed territory. Currently, authorities have not identified any suspects, nor have they confirmed if the remains are related to a specific mortuary. Both Palm Mortuaries and Cemetery, and law enforcement agencies have yet to comment on this investigation.
