Marvel Faces Major Layoffs Amid Disney Restructuring

Marvel is experiencing significant upheaval as Disney, its parent company, implements strict changes, including substantial layoffs in the team responsible for Hollywood’s major superhero hits.

Approximately 8% of Marvel’s workforce will be affected, impacting both Marvel Entertainment in New York and Marvel Studios in Burbank. This round of layoffs is set to touch nearly all departments—production of film and television, publishing, franchise operations, finance, and legal, according to reports.

In a memo to staff, Walt Disney Company CEO Josh D’Amaro remarked, “We know this is difficult,” outlining that this reduction will ultimately affect 1,000 employees across the company.

“These decisions do not reflect individual contributions or the overall strength of the company. Instead, they stem from our continual assessment of how we can more effectively manage and reinvest our resources,” he added.

The visual development unit at Marvel Studios, recognized for crafting the unique aesthetic of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will be hit particularly hard.

This team, which comprises illustrators, character designers, and other creative professionals, has been instrumental in defining key titles like “The Avengers,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” and “Daredevil.”

Sources indicate that almost the entire visual development department has been cut, leaving only a minimal core group to oversee project-based freelance and contract work. Many of those affected had dedicated years, sometimes over a decade, to building Marvel’s iconic visual identity.

While some artists may continue at the studio on a freelance basis, they will no longer have the security of full-time employment.

News of these layoffs started circulating internally and on social media recently, catching many insiders by surprise.

Marvel had made some smaller layoffs in the previous year, but this restructuring appears to be one of the most significant in the company’s recent timeline.

This change comes as Disney reduces Marvel’s production output after a period of rapid growth in film and streaming initiatives. Executives suggest a shift towards fewer, more focused releases following criticism about audience oversaturation.

The layoffs contribute to a broader trend of job losses in the entertainment sector, as studios face rising costs and shifts in audience viewing habits.
