Bears Season Impacted by Overtime Interception
The crucial interception in overtime that effectively ended the Bears’ season didn’t stem from Caleb Williams, according to former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel. He criticized Bears wide receiver DJ Moore for what he called a “lack of effort” during that critical moment when a deep pass from Williams was intercepted by Rams safety Kamren Karl, leading to a 20-17 loss.
“You can’t blame Caleb Williams for the OT INT… The Bears made a perfect play,” Daniel expressed on X, offering detailed commentary through a video.
He emphasized the inadequacy of Moore’s effort, saying, “#2’s lack of effort is clearly visible… I can’t just give up on this route.” His remarks were stirred by a review of the play from various angles where he pointed out that Williams needed better support from his teammates.
Reflecting on Moore’s performance, Daniel noted, “To be completely honest, if this is a season-long effort and what you’ve given me… that’s not the kind of effort you want.” Daniel, having spent two seasons with the Bears, mentioned there’s significant room for Williams to connect with Moore, suggesting, “First of all, the angle is off. It’s coming here when it should be coming here,” referring to a needed adjustment in positioning.
He reiterated his concerns about Moore’s movement, stating, “DJ Moore comes in and he’s just jogging there. To me, he’s just jogging, and Caleb Williams is counting on him 22 yards on the numbers.”
Williams himself noted that the interception was due to a “miscommunication.” He mentioned he would need to analyze the situation further but recognized a disconnect: “From what I saw at that moment, he tried to flatten under the safety, but kept it vertical.”
The Bears wrapped up their regular season with an 11-6 record under new coach Ben Johnson, securing the No. 2 seed in the NFC, a surprising finish to an unpredictable season.
With their victory on Sunday, the Rams have advanced to the NFC Championship Game against the Seahawks next week in Seattle.
