Senator Blackburn Pushes for DNA Testing to Combat Human Trafficking at the Border

Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee has reiterated her call for DNA testing for immigrants to help combat human trafficking at the southern border. This suggestion was made in a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, sent out on Friday.

In her correspondence, Blackburn highlighted that the recent “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” includes considerable funding aimed at improving border security and immigration enforcement.

She stated, “This groundbreaking law provides vital resources to prevent child trafficking and the recycling of children. Specifically, it allocates funds for DNA collection and fingerprinting.” Blackburn emphasized that implementing this provision would be a significant step in protecting innocent children.

There’s an increasing concern regarding unaccompanied minors entering the U.S. who haven’t undergone proper screening of their sponsors. Millions have crossed the border illegally since the Biden administration took office. The ongoing debate has sparked arguments among lawmakers about solutions for border security—whether that entails building more barriers or tackling issues related to drug cartels.

Blackburn continued by asserting that family DNA testing and fingerprinting are effective measures that U.S. Customs and Border Protection could employ to counteract child trafficking, identify potential threats, and ensure the safety of these vulnerable children.

The Trump administration recently announced that around 13,000 children had “lost or vetted sponsors,” and they were working diligently to clear a backlog of 65,000 cases stemming from previous border situations.

“The horror of human trafficking is immense. It represents a form of modern slavery. By keeping our borders open and allowing people to enter illegally, the Biden administration has unfortunately facilitated a massive human trafficking operation,” Blackburn remarked, noting a generational opportunity to tackle this issue effectively.

The senator concluded her letter by recommending that these funds be used to implement DNA verification methods, including rapid testing for family relationships at the border, and that all immigrants, particularly children under 14, should undergo fingerprinting upon entry into the United States.
