DNC chair disregards NYC mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s refusal to denounce 'intifada' chants

DNC Chair Addresses Concerns Over Mayor’s Responses

Ken Martin, the Chair of the Democratic National Committee, eased worries from Jewish Democrats regarding Zoran Mamdani, the leading candidate for New York City Mayor, and his hesitance to condemn a controversial slogan. In a recent PBS interview, Martin indicated a willingness to embrace individuals who use chants linked to protests against Israel.

“Honestly, there are no candidates in this party you’ll agree with all the time,” Martin noted, responding to a question about Mamdani’s defense of rallying cries that have sparked debates about anti-Israel sentiments.

“Sure, I sometimes disagree with Mamdani,” he acknowledged. However, he emphasized the importance of inclusivity within the party, saying that, as the DNC chair for the past 14 years, success comes from broadening the coalition. “We include conservative Democrats, central Democrats, and progressives like me. We need everyone to win,” he stated.

“Ultimately, that’s the essence of our party — we’re a big tent,” he added.

Mamdani, known for his critical stance on Israel, has faced scrutiny for his refusal to distance himself from activists promoting “globalization of intifadas.” Just last month, this phrase gained significant attention.

Some Queens lawmakers interpreted the chant as an expression of a desperate yearning for Palestinian rights. Mamdani, in a June NBC interview, stood firm, saying, “That’s not the language I use. My focus is on universal human rights.” He insisted that his rhetoric would reflect his intentions for the city.

“I don’t think it’s the mayor’s job to monitor such speeches,” he remarked.

Some members within the Democratic Party, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have urged Mamdani to clarify his stance on the contentious slogan.

If he wins, Mamdani would mark a historic moment as New York City’s first Muslim mayor.
