DNC chair Ken Martin likens the U.S. to Iran for 'killing protesters'

Comparison of U.S. and Iran by DNC Chairman

Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin recently drew parallels between the United States and Iran through a series of social media posts, alleging that both nations share a responsibility for “murdering protesters.”

In his initial remarks on X, Martin voiced support for protesters in both countries who are challenging a “regime that perpetrates violence without accountability.” He stated, “From Tehran to my hometown of Minneapolis, people rise against regimes using violence without accountability. In Iran, brave protesters confront a far-right theocratic regime that suppresses dissent and stifles basic freedoms.”

He elaborated, adding that in the aftermath of the fatal shooting of Renee Good in Minneapolis, a large number of people have taken to the streets to demand justice and transparency, advocating for an end to “unchecked federal forces that destroy lives and tear families apart.” He emphasized the need for solidarity across borders against authoritarian regimes and the necessity of defending the right to live free from fear and state violence, using hashtags like #StandWithIran and #JusticeForReneeGood.

Martin’s comments referenced the ongoing unrest in Iran, where protests have resulted in numerous deaths and thousands of arrests as security forces attempt to suppress dissent. Meanwhile, the situation in Minneapolis gained attention due to the shooting of Renee Good by ICE agents, who responded to her attempting to drive a vehicle toward them.

Despite facing backlash for likening the Trump administration to the Iranian government, Martin stood firm, stating, “If comparing the United States and Iran makes you angry, ask us why. Killing protesters, suppressing dissent, kidnapping legal citizens, ignoring courts, and intimidating critics—it’s authoritarian behavior everywhere.” He added that public sentiment in Minneapolis is not silent and expressed disdain for any rapid defense of the government’s actions.

In a subsequent post, he referred to critics as “MAGA ghouls” and also took the opportunity to mock President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

Martin’s direct response to critics included, “Hey, MAGA Ghoul, no one is ‘advocating violence’. We encourage the rule of law,” suggesting if such views frighten people, they might reconsider their defense of individuals who violate laws, referring disparagingly to Trump.

The DNC and the White House have yet to respond to requests for comments regarding Martin’s assertions and comparisons. Martin has been vocal in his opposition to Trump since his election, labeling him variously as a “dictator” and indicating his governance resembles “fascism in a red tie.”
