DNC decided to cover over $20M of Kamala Harris's campaign debt in an informal agreement, according to a report.

Following a significant loss in the 2024 presidential race, former Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) have reportedly struck a “handshake deal.” This agreement allowed the financially burdened DNC to address approximately $20 million in debt linked to Harris’s campaign, in exchange for an unofficial commitment to help fundraise for the Democratic nominee in the future, as noted in a recent report.

Federal Election Commission records indicate that since the election, the DNC has expended a considerable amount on Harris’s behalf, allocating funds to pollsters, consultants, event production companies, and various other expenses. For instance, one production firm, Freeman, has received nine payments from the DNC since late last year, totaling around $3.5 million.

During a brief 15-week campaign, Harris’s efforts were notably costly, with spending reaching $1.5 billion, which included high-profile concerts leading up to Election Day.

In a bright spot earlier this year, the DNC claimed it raked in a “recorded $40 million” during the first four months of Chairman Ken Martin’s leadership. However, entering 2025, the committee faced a much different reality, starting with $22.1 million in funds, and following the arrangement to clear Harris’s debts, ending July with just $13.9 million.

The specifics of Harris’s contract with the DNC remain undisclosed to her supporters, who are still being solicited for contributions. Allegedly, these funds are aimed at resolving her outstanding debts. In a February email to her network, Harris encouraged donations, promising that they would soon work towards securing support for the next election.

The DNC continues to keep track of its finances, managing a ledger to compare rising figures against the amounts they have already paid back. The most recent charge from Harris’s campaign to the DNC was a hefty sum of $498,287.30 to Howard University, her undergraduate alma mater, where she delivered her concession speech.

As of now, the DNC has remained silent regarding requests for comments concerning these developments.
