DNC puts up billboards holding Trump responsible for rural hospital shutdowns

Democrats Highlight Rural Health Care Issues in New Campaign

On Tuesday, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) erected a sign outside three rural hospitals, claiming these facilities are facing closures or cutbacks due to a recent domestic policy package signed by President Donald Trump. The DNC placed this sign in locations including Sirex, Missouri; Stillwell, Oklahoma; and Missoula, Montana, in an effort to inform rural voters—who largely supported Trump in the last election—about the impacts on their health care.

The committee expressed concerns that “residents are beginning to feel the immediate effects of Trump’s budget betrayal,” referring to a substantial and divisive tax cuts and spending bill, which Trump and Congressional Republicans have termed “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

The billboard details were first reported by Fox News Digital on Tuesday morning, indicating the DNC’s strategic outreach. The messaging is part of a broader campaign by Democrats to challenge what they argue is an overreach of Trump’s budget decisions.

This presidential package, infused with Trump’s ambitions for the next election cycle, contains various priorities—most notably tax cuts, immigration reform, and debt limitations. It aims to extend the tax cuts from 2017, with notable changes including the removal of taxes on tips and overtime pay.

According to analyses by the Congressional Budget Office, this bill is projected to reduce government spending by approximately $4.4 trillion over a decade. However, the political ramifications of the package are significant, especially as they play into upcoming Senate races.

Moreover, the measure allocates billions for border security while solidifying Trump’s tough stance on immigration. The comprehensive legislative package, valued at around $3.4 trillion, is expected to contribute to rising government bond levels, though many Republicans contest the estimates provided by the Congressional Budget Office.

Changes proposed under the new law also significantly alter Medicaid—a longstanding program that supports around 71 million low-income individuals in the U.S. The DNC critiques these modifications, arguing they pose risks to vulnerable populations.

This legislative effort, in part, serves as a counterbalance to Trump’s tax cuts and cuts to food stamps, affecting crucial safety net programs. Along with new regulations and work requirements for Medicaid recipients, critics, including Democrats, argue that these measures undermine support for millions of Americans.

The DNC has harshly criticized the bill signed into law on July 4, emphasizing that it jeopardizes Medicaid and threatens rural health facilities. Ken Martin, the DNC chairman, stated, “Rural hospitals have already collapsed thanks to Donald Trump, and now he’s further damaging them with his budget.” He pointed out that closures and service cuts directly impact those who supported Trump, framing the discussion as one where rural health is under serious stress due to federal policies.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Wayley countered by advocating for the benefits of tax cuts included in the bill. He claimed that these measures would assist communities nationwide, arguing that they pave the way for economic recovery and better health outcomes.

The conversation surrounding this package is poised to be a significant theme in the lead-up to next year’s midterm elections, as both parties gear up to defend and contest their respective positions in Congress.
