DNC reveals $1.5 million funding for New Jersey governor’s race

DNC announces $1.5 million investment in New Jersey governor’s race

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has declared a significant investment of $1.5 million in the New Jersey Governor Race, marking one of the first major commitments for the year.

This financial backing is set to be among the largest and earliest contributions aimed at supporting New Jersey Democrats during this off-year election cycle, according to the DNC’s announcement.

The funding will be used to hire local directors, organizers, and essential staff. It aims to enhance voter outreach efforts, test new strategies and tools, convey the party’s message, and broaden its influence for the upcoming 2024 election. The initiative focuses on engaging voters from diverse backgrounds, including Black, Latino, Asian, Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.

“New Jersey needs a Democratic leader who stands up to Trump’s chaos and cruelty while paving the way for better futures for families,” stated DNC Chairman Ken Martin. “We intend to achieve this through the dedicated efforts of New Jersey Democrats’ coordination campaign.”

The race includes a 2021 rematch between Democrat Mikier Cheryl, a former state legislator and the Democratic nominee, and Republican Jack Ciattarelli.

After a performance in the Garden State that exceeded Trump’s results from last year and a narrow loss to former Vice President Harris, Republicans are optimistic about surprising outcomes in this year’s governor’s race.

In contrast, Democrats are hoping to rally support around four-term House member Sherrill to navigate the challenges posed by Ciattarelli.

Martin criticized Trump’s policies for their negative impact, accusing New Jersey Republicans of betraying the families they represent in favor of Trump’s agenda and the interests of wealthy donors.

“The DNC takes pride in supporting the voting process through this investment in Mikier Cheryl and New Jersey Democrats,” he remarked. “Residents of the Garden State can count on our backing to ensure that families are represented in the governor’s mansion and Congress well into 2026.”

New Jersey Democratic Party Chairman Leroy Jones Jr. expressed gratitude for the DNC’s investment in a statement.

“New Jersey deserves a governor like Mikier who is committed to reducing costs, safeguarding healthcare, and standing up to Donald Trump,” Jones said. “This investment will enable us to counter Ciattarelli’s campaign and enhance our personnel and strategies as we aim for a majority in the state Capitol this fall.”

While independent public polling is still limited, a recent Fairleigh Dickinson University poll indicated that Cheryl is currently eight points ahead.

The outcome of this race is viewed as a crucial indicator for political parties leading up to next year’s midterm elections, alongside the Virginia governor’s race.
