The Democratic National Committee is rolling out a new ad campaign in newspapers in key battleground states on Tuesday that slams former President Donald Trump as a “con man,” a “liar,” a “naysayer” and a “threat to our democracy.”
Advertising campaigns, Shared with The Hillwill appear on the home pages of the websites of The Philadelphia Enquirer, The Arizona Republic and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The campaign highlights Trump’s deflection when asked repeatedly during last week’s presidential debate whether he would accept the results of the 2024 election, with the former president saying he would accept the results “if it’s a fair and legitimate and good election, absolutely.”
“Trump’s plans for revenge and retaliation have grown ever more frantic since he incited a violent mob to storm the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the will of the American electorate,” said Rosemary Voegelin, communications director for the Democratic National Committee. “This week, the DNC is once again reminding voters in key battleground states that the only thing standing between Donald Trump and our democracy is Joe Biden.”
The ad campaign was launched just one day after the Supreme Court ruled that the president has absolute immunity for acts within the core responsibilities of his office and is presumed immune for all other acts of official conduct. The decision marks a victory for Trump, who has asserted presidential immunity as a defense in his federal election subversion case, in which he is charged with efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and his actions leading up to the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
Biden responded to the Supreme Court’s decision Monday night, calling it a “dangerous precedent.”
“In effect, today’s ruling almost certainly means that there are effectively no limits on presidential action. This is a fundamentally new principle,” Biden said. “This is a dangerous precedent because the power of the presidency will no longer be limited by law, including by the United States Supreme Court.”
