Kamala Harris’ Campaign Debt Continues to Burden DNC

In Washington, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) is still addressing the financial fallout from former Vice President Kamala Harris’ unsuccessful 2024 campaign, having paid at least $1.6 million just last month.

Harris’ campaign spent roughly $1.49 million on media production and consulting, alongside an additional $106,312 for data services. According to her statements, which included input from billionaire Mark Cuban, she aimed to position herself as a “professional business candidate.”

These recent payments have contributed to a total debt surpassing $20 million since Election Day. However, the exact amount still owed is uncertain.

Comparatively, former President Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign left a similar level of debt, one that took about three years to fully address, leading to Donna Brazile stepping in as chair. Some have claimed that Obama’s “negligence” contributed significantly to the party’s financial woes.

Reports from The New York Times in August indicated that after Donald Trump’s defeat of Harris in November, she entered a “handshake deal” with the DNC. This agreement stipulated that the committee would cover $20.5 million in outstanding campaign expenses.

These debts encompass various costs such as internal voting, consulting, and airfare, funding events that featured prominent artists like Beyoncé and Megan Thee Stallion.

After President Biden halted his re-election efforts on July 21, 2024, Harris spent an astonishing $1.5 billion in the 107 days leading up to Election Day, ultimately losing all seven essential battleground states to Trump.

Although fundraising efforts for the 2024 election almost reached the previous record with a combined total of $2.5 billion, DNC officials expressed concern as early as June about the party’s dwindling funds and potential for increased debt.

Some significant donors, including billionaires like Barry Diller and former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, have chosen to withdraw their support. One long-time former donor noted a prevailing sentiment that the DNC is ineffective.

In comparison, recent FEC reports for the first half of 2025 showed that the Republican National Committee amassed nearly $96.4 million in contributions, far eclipsing the DNC’s $69.2 million raised.

As of now, the DNC holds about $11.97 million in cash and has invested at least $3.5 million into a notable gubernatorial race in New Jersey, a state that has seen no Republican win the governor’s seat since 2013.

Neither DNC representatives nor Harris provided immediate comments on the situation.
