Democrats are reportedly changing their rules to select Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee in the first week of August, just a few weeks before the Democratic National Convention.
The shortened deadline underscores the Democrats’ disregard for the democratic process of choosing a presidential nominee. By simply selecting Harris as their nominee, Democrats would be invalidating nearly 14 million votes cast in the Democratic primary for President Joe Biden.
Democratic leaders are meeting on Wednesday to change roll call rules to allow Harris to accept the party’s nomination before arriving at the convention site in Chicago, Bloomberg reported. report:
The idea of a virtual roll call was floated in May to allow time for Democratic candidates to appear on the ballot in some states with early filing deadlines, party officials said. The convention’s rules committee will meet Wednesday to finalize the procedure, the final hurdle to holding the vote.
Ohio’s Aug. 7 deadline prompted the rule change, leading the state to move it to Sept. 1, but it’s unclear whether the old deadline will also apply to the 2024 election.

An early nomination vote, which could take place as soon as Aug. 1, would further pressure Harris to choose a running mate in advance. Party leaders have not set a deadline for nominations, but Ohio law requires parties to certify in writing that they will include the names of their presidential and vice presidential candidates on the ballot.
