The doctor was accused of pushing his wife away from a scenic Hawaiian cliff and trying to smash his head with a rock when he refused to take a photo with him.
According to Honolulu police, 46-year-old anesthesiologist, Gerhardt Konig, was arrested Monday after a vicious attack at Pali Lookout, Oahu's famous panoramic vista.
Konig was charged with two attempted murders on Wednesday, and his bail was set at $5 million, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday. Kitv reported.
“Why did he do this? That's a mystery,” Konig's lawyer, Miles Brainer, told the outlet.
“He has nothing in his record here or anywhere else he has ever lived,” the lawyer said.
“So it's amazing that he's engaged in this kind of behavior out of nowhere.”
The doctor is said to have surprised his nuclear engineer wife when he refused to take a photo with him while hiking along the popular Paripuka hiking trail that offers stunning views of the Oahu coastline.
He tried to push her off the trail, then punched his wife and slammed her with the rocks.
Ariel Konig was rushed to the hospital in danger with multiple face and head injuries after the attack early Monday. According to Honolulu Police Station.
Her doctor's husband was arrested near Paris Highway later that night after a short leg pursuit, officers said.
Konig, who was employed by an independent contractor to provide medical services as an anesthesiologist in Maui, said in a statement Monday.
