Doctor’s Wife Testifies About Assault During Hike
The wife of a doctor in Hawaii recounted a harrowing incident on Tuesday, describing how her husband allegedly assaulted her during a birthday hike. Ariel Koenig testified in court that she believed he was trying to kill her, recalling a moment when she exclaimed, “He’s trying to kill me,” as the attack unfolded.
Ariel was giving evidence against her husband, Gerhard Koenig, an anesthesiologist, who faces accusations of attempted murder related to an incident that occurred on March 24, 2025, on Oahu’s Pali Puka Trail. He has denied the charges.
Ms. Koenig shared that they had traveled from Maui to celebrate a birthday and hoped to mend their marriage after she received “flirty” texts from a co-worker. However, things escalated on the hike when Gerhard reportedly grabbed her arm and began forcing her toward the cliff’s edge, yelling “I’ve had enough,” as she recalled.
In her testimony, Ariel stated that in a desperate move to save herself, she threw herself to the ground and clung to plants nearby. She then saw her husband holding a syringe, and he allegedly told her to “hold still,” before slapping her. To her horror, he picked up a rock and struck her multiple times.
“I just started screaming because in my mind he was trying to knock me out and drag me over the cliff,” she recalled, explaining how she felt like she was fighting for her very life. Eventually, two other hikers stumbled upon the scene and alerted authorities, with one caller declaring, “There’s a guy trying to kill her.”
When the hikers appeared, Ariel testified that her husband stopped attacking her, crawled away, and fled on foot. Honolulu police later apprehended him after a search was launched that night. She reported that he had struck her with a rock approximately ten times, and although she didn’t lose consciousness, she required medical attention for severe lacerations on her scalp, showcasing her scars in court.
During cross-examination, Gerhard’s defense lawyer, Thomas Otake, suggested that this was merely an emotional conflict rather than an attempt on her life. He even proposed that Ariel might have struck him first with a rock, which she firmly rejected, stating, “I would call this an assault versus a brawl.”
Ariel Koenig decided to end her marriage in May 2025, seeking sole custody of their two young children. Since his arrest, Gerhard has remained in custody, and a judge has dismissed his plea to have the charges dropped. He has also been suspended from his role at Maui Memorial Medical Center.
