On Thursday, officials from the Justice Department affirmed their commitment to safeguarding the free speech rights of citizen journalists. This follows Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson’s allegations that “extremist influencers” have been harassing Somali child care providers in the city.
Ahead of her inauguration, Wilson shared a message expressing her “solidarity” with Somali child care workers, who are facing scrutiny due to a child care fraud scandal that originated in Minnesota, over a thousand miles away.
The mayor, identifying as a socialist, stated, “I support Somali daycare workers who have endured targeted harassment and denounce the surveillance campaign led by extremist influencers.” She even issued a warning against filming day care centers in a post on X.
“In Seattle, we stand for unity, and we won’t accept any attempts to threaten, harass, or film Somali childcare workers,” Wilson declared. “Such actions are unacceptable and jeopardize the safety of children and families.”
She also emphasized, “Home-based child care programs are meant to be places of care, safety, and trust. They operate as private businesses and are governed by regulations, not by individual actions or entities.”
Wilson’s remarks caught the attention of Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who heads the Justice Department’s civil rights division. Dhillon cautioned the mayor against infringing on the rights of independent journalists.
“In America, questioning and citizen journalism aren’t hate crimes; they are protected rights. If Seattle tries to suppress that speech, @CivilRights will intervene to protect it!” Dhillon responded on X.
She added, “Prepare yourself accordingly!”
Recently, independent journalist Nick Shirley gained attention for releasing video footage of a seemingly deserted daycare center in Minnesota, which was funded by taxpayers, leading to suspicions of fraud.
This prompted some citizen journalists in Seattle to visit a nursery school reportedly operated by members of the Somali community, which also receives state support.
Authorities have indicated that they’ve discovered evidence suggesting that certain childcare centers may be committing fraud against the state.
