FBI Seizes Domains Linked to Chinese Espionage Efforts
Recently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported that it has taken control of 13 websites believed to be operated by Chinese agents. These sites were allegedly used to recruit former and current U.S. officials with security clearance.
According to sources, individuals behind these platforms posed as fake consulting firms. Their goal? To lure American personnel into divulging confidential or potentially classified information in exchange for payment.
“A lot of this information comes from interviews with people who noticed something was off. They reported that they were receiving payments in unusual virtual currencies and through online payment systems,” explained Dan Wierzbicki, the special agent leading the counterintelligence and cyber division at the FBI’s Washington field office.
The FBI suspects that those involved in this scheme may have acted knowingly or unknowingly on behalf of the Chinese government.
This operation is part of a broader trend of increased economic and political espionage. A report from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) last year cited foreign actors trying to recruit federal employees, particularly during the layoffs prompted by the Trump administration at various companies.
The Five Eyes intelligence alliance, comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, has recently issued a joint warning. The warning underscores how Chinese military intelligence is targeting Western individuals.
These operatives often disguise themselves as think tanks and private companies, posting false job listings for roles like foreign policy and defense analysts on legitimate job platforms. When individuals apply, they often ask for sensitive information, promoting cryptocurrencies or online payments for “reports” to obscure their real intentions.
“For too long, the Chinese government has sought to exploit U.S. government employees using fake companies and job postings as a cover. Today, we shut them down. The FBI will continue to utilize every tool available to protect Americans and national security from this threat,” said Daniel Wierzbicki, Special Agent in Charge of the Counterintelligence and Cyber Division at the FBI’s Washington Field Office.
