SANTO DOMINGO, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC (AP) — Authorities in the Dominican Republic announced Thursday that they have launched an investigation after an immigration officer was accused of raping a 14-year-old girl.
The girl’s mother, who is from neighboring Haiti, claimed the assault occurred after a suspect entered her home near the luxury resort town of Punta Cana last week.

Human rights activist Santiago Molina said the incident occurred as immigration officers were raiding a home in an area known as Belon, where mostly Haitian migrants have settled.

Molina said the girl’s mother was at work at the time of the assault and that he accompanied her to file a report. She added that her family is being harassed as a result.

A statement from the General Directorate of Migration in response to questions from The Associated Press said officers would be exposed to justice if they were found to be involved in the incident.
The Associated Press is not naming the girl’s mother to protect her privacy.
