Don Bacon opposes Trump's proposal to cut spending

In a notable shift among Republicans, Rep. Don Bacon from Nebraska has openly disagreed with President Trump. Bacon, who has previously urged Trump to retract certain statements, has made it clear that he does not support the president’s recent budget cuts that would affect global health initiatives.

“I told them I wasn’t on board,” he stated regarding the proposed cuts that would remove millions from important global health programs. He emphasized the necessity of funding for AIDS prevention, calling it an important legacy effort dating back to George Bush’s presidency.

In a recent post on social media, Bacon described the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) as a commendable program that reflects well on American values. He indicated that the proposed budget plan suggests a $400 million cut from PEPFAR, which provides critical assistance to countries that might not align with U.S. interests.

A White House spokesperson explained that the cuts were intended to eliminate ineffective spending but reassured that life-saving assistance would remain intact, continuing to allocate significant resources for essential services.

Meanwhile, Bacon has faced pressure from House Republicans to align more closely with party lines, although he remains critical and vocal about his beliefs. He has noted his support for some of Trump’s policies, particularly regarding border security, but insists he doesn’t want to be a follower blindly.

Reflecting on his role within the party, Bacon expressed a desire to advocate for what he believes is the true essence of Republican values, warning against following trends that he considers detrimental. He concluded by emphasizing the importance of party integrity and a commitment to genuine Republican principles.

Bacon, who has represented Nebraska in the House since 2017, continues to navigate the complex dynamics of party loyalty and moral responsibility.
