Don Lemon Faces Potential Legal Issues Following Church Protest Coverage
Former CNN host Don Lemon may be facing criminal charges linked to his involvement in a protest that targeted a church in Minnesota during a Sunday service. Fox News legal analyst Greg Jarrett suggested that journalism does not necessarily exempt someone from accountability when a crime occurs.
Lemon gained attention for his coverage of the unrest at Cities Church in St. Paul, during which protesters accused the pastor of being associated with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Lemon noted that the “freedom to protest” is a key principle of the First Amendment.
Jarrett remarked to Sean Hannity, “The right to protest doesn’t apply to private property, especially churches, which are legally protected spaces.”
He further pointed out that those responsible for the unrest could be charged with several offenses, including trespassing and disrupting a religious gathering. He emphasized that the actions could also violate the FACE Act.
Jarrett claimed that Lemon could be seen as a “voluntary participant” in the disturbances. He stated, “It seems he integrated into the protest and knew the group intended to commit these acts. Claiming to be a journalist offers no legal shield against charges.”
Despite this, Lemon defended his reporting, expressing disbelief that he was portrayed as the focal point of protests he was merely documenting—as he highlighted, he wasn’t the only reporter present. He also addressed the online threats he faced from some individuals, stating that these hostile reactions have been amplified by certain media platforms.
Lemon added, “If we’re investing so much time stoking anger, we should redirect that energy towards addressing the fundamental issue that sparked the protests: the tragic death of Renee Nicole Good. I stand by my reporting.”
