Donald Trump Calls to ‘Kill FISA’ as Speaker Johnson Moves to Enable Deep State Surveillance

Former President Donald Trump called on Wednesday to “kill FISA” as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) moves to reauthorize the controversial surveillance law.

“Kill FISA. It was used illegally against me and many others. They spied on my campaign!!! DJT” Former President I have written.

Prime Minister Johnson is expected to vote to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), a controversial surveillance law targeting foreign adversaries. However, they often monitor the private communications of American citizens.

The House is scheduled to debate and vote Wednesday on rules for how to vote on the Information Reform and Securing America Act (RISAA), a bill that would reauthorize Section 702. Privacy advocates, including the Judiciary Committee, are on both sides. Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Ranking Member Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) want to attach a warrant requirement to the bill.

Mr. Johnson issued a warning, insisting that the Senate would force a full reauthorization if his version of the bill fails.

“I want to be clear about what happens if we fail this week. The Senate is prepared to move forward with a full extension of FISA, and if the House does not pass the bill, we will be forced to accept it next week, because this important “We cannot keep our national security measures in the dark,” he said. Said.

Noah Chauvin, a privacy expert at the Brennan Center for Justice, asked rhetorically about Johnson’s claims: “If you can’t pass the RISAA rules, how do you expect to get a full reauthorization in the House?” did.

Johnson can pass the rule because House Republicans have a slim one-vote majority and Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) has already promised not to vote for the rule. Until then, we are facing a steep slope.

“I vote against the rule to move forward with the FISA bill this week, at least without a chance to get a vote on something that solves the problem!” he wrote.if @SpeakerJohnson He’s not going to fix FISA, but we’re left wondering what he actually wants to fix. ”

Rep. John Rhodes (R-Tenn.) told Breitbart News in a written statement:

Reauthorizing the FISA Section 702 program without major reforms would give the government the power to continue to unjustifiably monitor Americans, which is what we did when we adopted the Fourth Amendment to privacy. This is in direct contradiction to what the founders intended. Worse yet, by denying my amendments aimed at improving and reforming this out-of-control surveillance program, the reauthorization bill abandons any transparency and accountability that Americans deserve. It’s doubling.

The Rules Committee is out of order with Rose’s amendments. After editing, it will look like this:

  1. Notaries authorized by the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) to handle classified information may observe proceedings before the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) and record applications and communications under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978. Requires the establishment of a program to enable review. (50 USC § 1881a). It also requires the development of a secure mechanism for notaries to report concerns about potential wrongdoing to Congress through confidential channels.
  2. Changes the reauthorization of section 702 authority from five years to two years.
  3. Grants members of Congress the right to attend hearings or oral arguments conducted by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) or the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISCR).

“Allowing the program to end is far from the worst action Congress could take,” Rose added.
