As former President Donald Trump formally accepted the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he called for an end to the legal war weaponized against him in an emotional Republican National Convention speech.
Without mentioning President Joe Biden by name, Trump declared that Democrats must demonstrate the sincerity of their calls for unity by ending the numerous legal battles being filed against him in jurisdictions across the country.
“This election should be about the issues facing our country and making America successful, safe, free and great again,” Trump told the packed crowd. “In a time when politics have too often divided us, now is the time to remember that we are all one people. We are one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
Trump then directly addressed the numerous legal attacks against him.
“We should not criminalize dissent or demonize political disagreement, which is happening at a level we’ve never seen in our country recently,” he said. “In that spirit, Democrats should immediately stop weaponizing the justice system and branding their political opponents as enemies of democracy, especially since that’s not true.”
He continued: “In fact, I am the man who is saving democracy for the people of my country.”
President Trump was discussing Judge Eileen Cannon’s ruling Monday that found Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of special counsel Jack Smith unconstitutional.
Cannon’s ruling puts an end to Smith’s lawsuit against Trump over the storage of classified documents and may also have dealt a significant blow to Smith’s lawsuit against Trump for alleged election interference. Breitbart reports:
With the case over, the legal campaign against Trump, or the so-called “loafers,” looks decidedly shaky. Trump was convicted in Manhattan of falsifying business records, but many observers view the prosecution as unlawful and the judge as biased, suggesting an appeal is likely to be successful.
“As I’m sure you all just read, this is huge news,” Trump said. “On Monday, a highly respected federal judge in Florida, Eileen Cannon, issued a landmark ruling finding that the prosecution and forgery lawsuit against me was completely unconstitutional and the entire case has been dismissed.”
Trump contrasted Democrats’ calls for unity with the legal war against him, and again called on Democrats to stop fighting him.
“If Democrats want to unite the country, they should end the partisan witch hunt that I’ve been living through for almost eight years, and they should do so without delay and hold the elections the people deserve. Either way, we’re going to win,” he said.
Trump then accused former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) of issuing subpoenas to his son Eric Trump and the Trump Organization, which he likely runs.
“They’ve had a very hard time,” Trump told the crowd, “and they’ve received more subpoenas than probably anybody in the history of the United States. Every week they get a new subpoena from crazy Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and it all just goes on and on and on and on and on.”
He continued, “They have to stop it. They’re destroying our country. We have to work to Make America Great Again, not beat up people. And we won. We beat them all. We beat them on impeachment, we beat them on indictment.”
“We beat them, but our country would be stronger and better if they had dedicated their talents to helping our country.”
