Just hours after the surprising announcement about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, US President Donald Trump expressed his willingness to assist both nations in resolving the Kashmir conflict. It’s crucial to highlight that India consistently asserts Kashmir is an essential part of its territory and opposes any external involvement in the matter. Reactions from the Indian government regarding Trump’s proposal are still pending.
“I take great pride in the strong and unwavering leadership of both India and Pakistan. I believe it’s crucial for Pakistan to cease any ongoing attacks, which could result in significant loss and devastation,” he stated.
He also mentioned, “I’m honored to have played a role in helping the US achieve this remarkable decision. Although I didn’t initially address it, I’m looking to boost trade with both nations. Furthermore, I’m hopeful that we can address the Kashmir issue, maybe not right away, but eventually.”
Trump’s announcement about the ceasefire came as a surprise, especially after India had conducted airstrikes on Pakistan’s military bases and the two countries had recently exchanged heavy fire.
“Following extensive discussions in the US, we’re delighted to report that both India and Pakistan have agreed to a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire. We commend both countries for exercising common sense and intellect,” Trump added.
Shortly after, Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that he and Vice President had conferred with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shebaz Sharif, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, and national security advisors from both sides. “We are happy to announce that both governments agree to an immediate ceasefire and will begin discussions on various topics in neutral venues,” he mentioned.
About half an hour later, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the ceasefire. He relayed that the Indian military’s operations director had communicated with his Pakistani counterpart. “They agreed that both sides would commence the ceasefire at 1700 hours on Saturday, halting all military actions on land,” he clarified, adding that further instructions would follow and discussions would resume at noon on May 12th.
Representatives from the Army, Navy, and Air Force later provided briefings, stating they remained “fully prepared and committed to safeguarding the integrity of the nation.” They warned that any future escalations could provoke a severe response.
