One of the pilots at the controls of the Brazilian plane that crashed last week, killing all on board, sounded a warning of impending catastrophe just a minute before the crash.
Brazilian local media outlet TV Globo, citing anonymous sources involved in the crash investigation, reported on Wednesday that the cockpit “black box” voice recorder recording showed the pilot was aware of the rapid loss of altitude in the lead up to the crash.
At one point, the co-pilot asked the captain what was going on and said the plane “needed more power,” according to the two-hour audio recording.
The new revelations come as investigators are still trying to determine what caused the Vorpass-operated ATR-72-500 plane to crash, killing all 62 people on board.
The plane crashed in Vinhedo on Friday afternoon local time while en route from Cascavel to São Paulo.
The plane plummeted about 17,000 feet in about a minute, but no one on the ground was injured.
Brazil’s Air Accident Investigation Center said in a statement it “guarantees” that no media outlet had access to the audio, recordings or data from the voice recorder, but did not comment directly on TV Globo’s report.
Footage captured the moment the plane spun out of control and crashed into trees.
The pilot did not report any emergency or bad weather before losing contact with crews on the ground.
Globo reported, citing investigators, that it is highly unlikely that the audio alone will be enough to pinpoint the exact cause of the accident.
