Dozens wounded, at least 22 killed in airstrikes in Beirut as tensions escalate in Israel conflict with Iran

Israeli airstrikes hit neighboring parts of Lebanon, killing at least 22 people and wounding dozens in an air raid on Beirut, according to the Associated Press.

The attack was the deadliest in more than a year of war between the warring countries and further escalated the conflict with Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants.

Lebanon's Health Ministry told The Associated Press that the airstrikes simultaneously targeted two residential buildings in separate neighborhoods, destroying an eight-story building and destroying the lower floors of the other.

The Israeli military told The Associated Press it was investigating the reported attack. Israeli airstrikes are more prevalent in Beirut's dense southern suburbs, where Hezbollah is based for most of its operations.

The attack took place on the same day Israeli forces opened fire on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, wounding two of them, the Associated Press reported.

Hezbollah has expanded its rocket attacks into densely populated areas deep inside Israel, causing few casualties but disrupting daily life for the country's people.

The attacks across Israel come as the Jewish state is embroiled in multiple conflicts with Hamas in the south and Hezbollah in the north.

Some 1.2 million people have been displaced in Lebanon since the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel escalated last month. More than 400,000 people have fled Lebanon to Syria, and around 1,400 have been killed, based on figures provided by the Lebanese Ministry of Health and the number of fighters believed to have been killed by Israel. Some 70,000 Israelis have been uprooted from their northern communities since the conflict began.
