Dr. Tony Evans Resumes Ministry Without a Leadership Position Following Unrevealed Misconduct

Dr. Tony Evans Restored to Ministry After Yearlong Resignation

After stepping down from his ministry role for over a year due to undisclosed issues, Dr. Tony Evans has been reinstated by the elders of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship Church, which serves around 11,000 members in Dallas, Texas.

The church acknowledged in an official statement the necessity of adhering to God’s standards and undergoing a restoration process. Dr. Evans expressed his contentment in having fully engaged with this process, stating during a recent Sunday service that he has complied with the church’s guidelines.

Despite his return, it has been reported that Evans will not resume any church staff or leadership roles. “With unanimous support from the Elder Committee and biblical principles, Dr. Evans has completed his restoration journey,” noted a church spokesperson.

At 75 years old, Evans had resigned in June 2024 after a lengthy 48 years of ministry, citing a personal lapse but emphasizing that he had not committed any crime.

“A few years back, I didn’t quite meet those standards myself, which is why I felt compelled to apply the same biblical expectations of repentance and restoration to myself that I’ve encouraged in others. I shared my situation with my family and the church elders, who generously extended their support to me. In light of this, I distanced myself from pastoral duties, entering the healing and restoration process set by the elders,” he shared.

Quoting scripture, the spokesperson also referenced Bible verses that guided Evans’ path to discipline and recovery. These scriptures highlighted the importance of self-reflection to avoid temptation, emphasizing the need for recovery to reflect Christ’s character and promote the church’s overall well-being.

“This wasn’t an attempt to conceal any wrongdoing, but rather to uphold the integrity of our process and protect everyone’s dignity while preventing undue speculation,” the spokesperson explained.

During a conversation with his son, Jonathan Evans, who took over as senior pastor, Dr. Evans described the restoration experience as “bittersweet.” He acknowledged the pain of stepping away from his life’s work, yet recognized that such challenges can deepen one’s relationship with God.

He mentioned that the church has developed policies aimed at assisting members and leaders who find themselves in similar situations, fostering an environment of healing rather than condemnation.

Dr. Evans reflected on the importance of applying the same standards to himself that he expected from others, reinforcing the church’s commitment to biblical governance under the guidance of the elders.

He commended his son for navigating these challenging times while upholding the family’s legacy within the church.

“There’s not just an empty seat; there’s a new one filled, and knowing my son occupies that position makes the transition that much more meaningful,” he remarked.
