Draymond Green Returns to Warriors on One-Year Deal
Draymond Green is officially staying with the Golden State Warriors, signing a one-year contract for $27.7 million, as reported by Klutch Sports.
In June, Green had opted out of his original player option, which was also for $27.7 million, intending to assist the Warriors in creating salary cap space to potentially sign LeBron James. There was real hope that pairing James with Stephen Curry might work out.
However, James ultimately decided to go to Philadelphia, agreeing to a two-year deal with the 76ers. This left the Warriors in a bit of a bind; their gamble to land LeBron didn’t pan out, bringing them back to square one with Green.
The new agreement doesn’t have a no-trade clause attached. It does, however, put the Warriors in a tighter position financially and reduces their options for adding more veterans, while still keeping future salary cap flexibility intact.
Interestingly, both Green and James are represented by Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, and Green’s earlier decision to opt out allowed the Warriors to pursue LeBron more cleanly. Unfortunately, this decision led to a situation where they couldn’t adjust their offer to James if things went south.
After LeBron chose the 76ers, re-signing Green became the logical option. General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. found less reason to consider moving on from such an important player, especially after rumors had circulated last season about Green being in trade discussions with Milwaukee.
The sole concession that Dunleavy managed to negotiate was Green’s one-year contract. It’s clear that Green isn’t the same athlete he once was during the peak of the Warriors’ dynasty. Shorter contracts like this one help the team steer clear of long-term commitments with older stars while keeping options open for the future.
Green’s return not only provides an emotional lift for the team but also reinstates a key defensive presence. Yet the Warriors are still shelling out significant money for a roster that appears to be past its championship prime.
They had cleared cap space pursuing LeBron, missed out on him, and are now back to paying Green what he would have received all along. Sometimes, in the offseason, the biggest moves come at a cost, even when they don’t happen.
