Drew Barrymore’s daughter used Playboy cover against her in argument

Drew Barrymore has revealed that her daughter Olive isn’t afraid to bring up her mother’s past during arguments over what her 11-year-old daughter should wear.

On Tuesday’s episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show,” the 49-year-old actress and Christina Aguilera discussed parenting after having a “very liberal” and “free-spirited” childhood.

“My daughter wants to wear crop tops,” said Barrymore, who has Olive and another daughter, Frankie, with ex-husband Will Kopelman. She said, “I’d say, ‘No,’ and she’d say, ‘You’re on the cover of Playboy.’”

“But I’m glad she said that,” Aguilera said with a laugh. The 43-year-old singer is mum to 16-year-old son Max with her ex-husband Jordan Bartman and has nine-year-old daughter Summer with her fiancé Matthew Rutler. She can relate to Barrymore’s situation, she explained.

“Well, I knew it was coming from the day I put on the chaps,” Aguilera admitted. “I thought, ‘Someday, I’m going to be like this,’ because my daughter also wants to wear crop tops. And I was like, ‘Can I take it down?'” I can see myself doing that. ”

“But I think I’m always trying to teach her that there are good people in the world and there are people with bad intentions. Rather than trying to scare people or make everyone do the same thing, “bad people, because they aren’t.” I…I think it’s also important to be very empowering about your sexuality, so I want her to really know who she is at the beginning. “

In 2002, Aguilera caused controversy when she wore a skimpy triangle string bikini top and leather chaps in the raunchy “Dirrty” music video. The then-21-year-old “Beautiful” hitmaker wore a variation of the racy ensemble during the press tour for her fourth studio album, “Stripped,” which featured “Dirty” as her lead single.

The music video for “Dirty” was met with backlash from some conservative groups who tried to ban it from being shown on MTV. The video was eventually banned in Thailand due to protests.

But Aguilera told Barrymore that she thought her past outfit choices and the “Never Been Kissed” star’s 1995 Playboy cover were empowering forms of self-expression.

“Even if we took it back to Chaps or Playboy, we were expressing ourselves and what we felt was best for us at the time. I think that was empowering.” the five-time Grammy Award winner said.

“I loved every minute of it,” Barrymore agreed.

“We didn’t do it for anybody,” Aguilera said. “And there’s a lot of labels and judgments that say, ‘Oh, you’re doing it for men.’ No, you’re creating that story in your head.”

“It’s about being an empowering woman and embracing your body and everything that makes you feel feminine,” she said. But you can accept it for yourself.

Barrymore went on to praise Aguilera for sharing her “powerful” approach to motherhood.

“You’re a very good mother, and I’ll show you why,” Barrymore said. “Being sane, strong, empowered, and encouraging a healthy body image and sense of self is such a powerful thing. Hearing your words is exactly what I wanted to hear.”
