A high-speed police chase ended in tragedy recently.
Heart-wrenching body camera footage shows the moments after a vehicle plunged into Puget Sound late Tuesday night at the Edmonds Ferry Terminal, where a 29-year-old driver was submerged along with his four passengers.
Panic erupted inside the vehicle as officers tossed life vests and flotation devices into the frigid water, urging the occupants to use them. The chilling footage has been shared widely.
Fortunately, four individuals were rescued, including the allegedly impaired driver, who was thought to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. They were taken to a nearby hospital, but sadly, two others—aged 45 and 48—did not survive the incident.
Details remain murky regarding the ownership of the victims.
The alarming event began around 11 PM when Washington State Patrol attempted to pull over a speeding Mini Cooper on Interstate 5, prompting a brief chase. A Snohomish County Sheriff’s Deputy picked up the pursuit after observing the same vehicle endangering traffic, speeding up to 120 mph before barreling through the ferry terminal gates.
A Washington Ferries employee remarked, “It sounded like he had launched it. He didn’t slow it down at all.”
Following the crash, ferry services were halted temporarily, and Recovery Cooper retrieved the Mini Cooper from 40 feet of water around 3:30 AM.
The reckless driver, whose name hasn’t been released, is currently being held but has not yet faced charges.
A local resident expressed her sorrow, saying, “It’s very tragic. Thank goodness another ferry wasn’t docked there. Otherwise, more people could have been involved. Honestly, I feel fortunate that it wasn’t worse.”
