Petitions Against ABC’s License Renewal Raise Serious Accusations
A coalition of conservative groups has filed petitions aimed at blocking ABC’s broadcast license renewal. They allege that the Disney-owned network exhibits sexism, promotes political violence, and has violated equal time regulations, even claiming it operates under the influence of Chinese agents.
The movement to halt ABC’s renewal has gained momentum since Brendan Carr, Secretary of the Federal Communications Commission, made it possible for petitioners to contest the network’s license request. Recent reports have highlighted these developments.
Brendan Carr initiated the renewal process early, emphasizing that his agency is examining ABC’s policies on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). This scrutiny extends to Jimmy Kimmel’s show and criticisms surrounding the network’s daytime talk program, The View. Consequently, the complaints from those opposing ABC are increasing.
For instance, the American Rights Center argues that ABC is failing to serve the “public interest” due to its apparent partisan bias. They assert, “ABC is ignoring longstanding commission precedent and principles that protect news integrity,” referencing instances from shows like Kimmel’s as evidence. They further claim the network engages in racism and sexism while complicity aligning with the Chinese Communist Party, neglecting serious accusations related to ethnic cleansing.
The Media Research Center, a media watchdog, is also advocating for the revocation of ABC’s license renewal, citing a long history of misuse of the license and claims of the network’s role in skewing national elections and spreading misinformation and violence. They allege that ABC, along with its local affiliates, including WABC in New York, utilizes public airwaves to neglect significant news coverage and engage in political bias while fostering misinformation.
In addition, the Article III Project contends that Disney’s ABC company is in violation of equal employment opportunity laws. They argue that the commission should reject ABC’s license renewal, stating, “This record demonstrates consistent and serious violations of federal regulations.” They advocate for strict terms to eradicate discrimination moving forward.
Lastly, America First Legal argues that licensing renewal should be denied due to ABC’s alleged lack of moral qualifications to hold a broadcast license.
As of now, Brendan Carr has not disclosed a timeline for these proceedings, noting that the renewal process will unfold in accordance with the Communications Act and its guidelines.
