DSA calls for the release of Nicolás Maduro following the operation in Venezuela

Democratic Socialists Condemn U.S. Actions Against Maduro

The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the largest socialist group in the country, has publicly condemned the U.S. arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. They are demanding that Maduro and his wife, who faces criminal charges in the U.S., be reinstated to power. In a statement, they described the Trump administration’s actions as an “illegal war against Venezuela.”

They articulated that this operation is an imperialistic attempt to transfer Venezuela’s oil resources to American companies, suggesting it would establish a puppet government aligned with U.S. interests in Latin America. This is, according to their view, part of a broader strategy reminiscent of the Monroe Doctrine. They further assert that these military actions violate both international law and U.S. regulations regarding war declarations.

On the other hand, President Trump claimed success on Saturday, noting that no U.S. military personnel were harmed during the operation, which led to the arrest of Maduro and his wife on drug-related charges. Maduro, who has been in power since 2013, faces allegations of working with various drug cartels to smuggle large quantities of cocaine into the U.S. Trump’s previous campaign included promises to combat the influx of illegal drugs, which included imposing tariffs on nations like China over fentanyl issues.

Response from Democratic Socialists

The DSA responded vigorously to this operation, asserting that it had nothing to do with drug trafficking. They claimed there is no substantial evidence backing the charge that Maduro or his senior officials are “narco-terrorists.” They likened this military initiative to the misguided Iraq War, suggesting it focuses on stealing oil and suppressing resistance to U.S. imperialism, ultimately harming the people of Latin America.

President Trump celebrated the military operation over the weekend, highlighting the effectiveness of U.S. military power. He proudly stated that the U.S. military possesses unmatched capabilities and equipment. The DSA also encouraged citizens to oppose what they deem an illegal warfare effort, aligning with their stance of supporting Venezuelan sovereignty.

In addition to Maduro’s capture, the DSA laid out seven demands that included the return of the Maduros to Venezuela, an end to the military conflict, and a cessation of military operations in the Caribbean.

The Maduros are currently detained at a facility in Brooklyn, with Maduro set to appear in court on Monday. Amid the political turmoil, left-wing leaders, such as newly-elected New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani, have voiced strong opposition to the U.S. actions, insisting that they are unlawful based on international standards.

Mamdani disclosed he had communicated directly with Trump regarding his concerns about the military operation, emphasizing the need to respect international law. He clarified his stance but did not immediately respond when asked if he aligns with the DSA’s condemnation.

Moderate Democrats have raised questions about the justification for the strike and the lack of congressional notification prior to the operation, whereas Republican leaders have largely praised the actions taken against Maduro. They cite the dictator’s history of alleged narcotics trafficking as justification for the military action, expressing support for Trump’s approach.
