Duckworth and Crow criticize DNC for using fallen soldiers in Memorial Day message

On Monday, a number of Democrats voiced their disapproval of a political attack post from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) that was shared on Memorial Day and later removed.

Senator Tammy Duckworth from Illinois stated, “It’s incredibly distasteful to use a heroic fallen soldier for a political attack on Memorial Day. As a Democrat, I condemn this DNC post.” Duckworth, an Army veteran and former helicopter pilot, lost both legs when her Black Hawk helicopter was attacked in Iraq.

A day after Memorial Day, America still remembers the sacrifices made by its fallen soldiers.

Representative Jason Crow, a former Army Ranger, also criticized the DNC for the post. He highlighted that, “If you wish to maintain the moral high ground, you need to do better. I have served my country and stood alongside those who made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s inappropriate to politicize this day. I won’t hesitate to speak up if my party misses the mark.”

The original post from the DNC, which gained significant attention on social media, read: “Today we honor the American heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in President Trump’s war against Iran.” It included images of fallen soldiers and mentioned “Trump’s wars.”

The post was met with backlash from the right as well, with RNC Chairman Joe Gruters also voicing criticism. The RNC’s X account later shared a screenshot of the DNC’s original message.

Later that same day, the DNC issued another memorial post stating, “This Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country and defend our freedoms.”

Furthermore, the War Department condemned the earlier post from the DNC. Senator Rick Scott from Florida accused Democrats of exploiting fallen soldiers as “political props,” saying, “This is outrageous, offensive, and un-American. Please take this down. These brave individuals did everything they could to defend their fellow Americans from a tyrannical regime intent on harm.”

The DNC did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment.

Recently, the DNC faced criticism regarding its analysis of the 2024 election. New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg took aim at the committee’s assessment, labeling it as “mysterious,” “treasonous,” and “ridiculous,” after a frustrating release process.

Goldberg observed that the document seemed hidden not because it was disrespectful, but because it was a failure. She criticized the lack of substantial content, pointing out that critical topics like “Israel” and “Gaza” were notably absent from the 192-page report.

She concluded, “It doesn’t provide meaningful insights into why the Democratic Party lost. A key issue seems to be the disconnect with many black and Latino men and the challenge of engaging irregular voters. Frankly, I wondered if this document was crafted by AI, which might have done a better job.”
