Duckworth Claims ICE Agents are Employing 'Gestapo Tactics' in Chicago

Sen. Tammy Duckworth Criticizes ICE Tactics in Chicago

On CBS’s “Face the Nation” this past Sunday, Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) condemned ICE agents for employing what she described as “Gestapo tactics” in Chicago.

Here’s a portion of the discussion:

Margaret Brennan: There seems to be an increase in agents or federal involvement. The FBI mentioned they were deploying personnel. Can you tell us about the protests? The videos from Chicago seem quite intense regarding immigration issues. Just yesterday, ICE authorities shot a woman in the Brighton Park neighborhood. Director Noem stated that ICE fired a defensive shot at an armed woman who had been in the news previously. She alleges that federal agents felt threatened. What feedback have you received from local officials about this incident?

Duckworth: They aren’t telling the truth, right? The Trump administration has a track record of dishonesty. We have a president known for lying, and they have misrepresented the situation from the start. There was even video showing tear gas canisters being fired, captured by a reporter just driving with her window down. We’re encouraging protesters to exercise their First Amendment rights peacefully. But with everyone having phones, documenting everything is crucial. It provides real evidence of what’s happening. I know the Trump administration consistently misleads. Generally, people are quiet and respectful; however, ICE’s behavior is very aggressive. Remember, they zip-tie children. They conduct raids in the middle of the night, forcibly separating kids from their families and dragging people into the streets. This kind of intimidation is what Trump aims for in Chicago. We’re not going to let that happen, and we’ll document everything, ensuring that, as a Portland judge noted, the directives from the Trump administration have no basis in reality.
