Dutch speed skater Jutta Lierdam is facing criticism for her choice to fly to the Olympics on a private jet, rather than traveling with her fellow athletes to Italy.
Lierdam, who is engaged to boxer Jake Paul, shared images on Instagram of herself socializing on the private flight, captioned with “Leaving to Milan.”
Former Dutch soccer player and current sports commentator Johan Derksen expressed his disapproval of Lierdam’s actions, calling them extravagant and suggesting that she’s already living a millionaire lifestyle. “I think, perhaps, she really wanted it this way,” Derksen remarked, according to reports.
At 27, Lierdam sported her Olympic team attire on the flight, indulging in a custom cupcake that read “Success Jutta” along with celebratory champagne.
During the journey, which featured Olympic-themed decorations, passengers enjoyed a variety of salads, including tuna and shrimp.
Derksen’s comments were quite sharp: “Her behavior strikes me as diva-like and unacceptable. If I were her coach, this wouldn’t fly.” He noted an increasing discontent among the Dutch public regarding her attitude.
Meanwhile, Jake Paul showed his support by commenting on her post, cheering for Lierdam.
The upcoming Milan-Cortina Games will mark Lierdam’s second Olympic participation; she previously earned a silver medal in the women’s 1000 meters at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The accomplished skater, ranked second in the world, aims to secure gold in both the 1000m and 500m events scheduled for February.
Fans and social media users have had mixed reactions to her choice of travel. Comments ranged from surprised to critical, with some feeling that flying on a private jet contradicts the spirit of being part of a national team. One user lamented, “Doesn’t reflect well,” while another pointed out the negative implications for the environment with such luxury travel.
These mixed sentiments highlight the ongoing dialogue about athlete conduct and its impact, especially in contexts like the Olympics.
