Dyson Launches New Smart Toothbrush
Dyson is making a move into the oral care market with the introduction of a smart toothbrush priced at $499. This innovative device features a built-in camera and a targeted liquid jet designed to clean those tricky spaces between teeth.
Set to launch on Tuesday, the CameraJet incorporates a 100,000-pixel macro camera and utilizes artificial intelligence to pinpoint gaps between teeth, automatically directing mouth rinse to those areas. It’s quite a leap for Dyson, known primarily for its vacuum cleaners and hair care products, adding a premium item to its product portfolio.
The camera in the CameraJet can process 28 images each second, and, intriguingly, the system can activate the jet in just 100 milliseconds upon detecting a gap.
The CameraJet distinguishes itself by using a conical liquid jet, differing from the narrow streams of traditional water flossers. Dyson claims it’s effective in removing plaque while functioning at lower pressures, which could make it less abrasive.
It features a 12.5-milliliter reservoir for mouth rinse, and users can refill it in about three seconds using the included dock. That’s, well, quite convenient.
Additionally, users can connect to the MyDyson app, allowing for real-time camera viewing. The app also provides cleaning guidance, coverage maps, and insights into brushing techniques. Dyson emphasizes privacy, stating that images are not stored or shared, with processing occurring directly on the device.
The company conducted laboratory tests indicating that the CameraJet may remove nearly 70% more plaque in difficult-to-reach areas compared to premium electric toothbrushes under certain conditions. Such tests involved simulated plaque, created in collaboration with the National University of Singapore.
Future plans also include the development of a low-foaming mouth rinse and SLS-free toothpaste specifically designed for use with this innovative toothbrush.
